Spatially aggregated landcover for Himalaya Region

This dataset is a spatially reaggregated version of the original full resolution multipurpose database which has been produced from visual interpretation of digitally enhanced LANDSAT ETM (years 2000 and 2006), LANDSAT TM (1990) and MSS (1970).

The classes represented in the map are a generalization of the original 35 land cover classes for the Himalaya Region.

The mapping area is the Hindu Kush - Karakorum - Himalaya mountain chain, which is about 1,500,000 km2. Portions of the following 5 countries: Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, China and Myanmar, and the full Nepal and Bhutan, have been mapped.

Source: FAO-GLCN Regional Harmonization Programme.

The interpretation of the satellite imagery has been performed by the GLCN land cover team with the support of the country expercts of Afghanistan, Buthan, Cina, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan and ICIMOD.

The land cover classes have been developed using the FAO/UNEP international standard LCCS classification system. This database can be analyzed in the GLCN software Advanced Database Gateway (ADG), which provides a user-friendly interface and advanced functionalities to breakdown the LCCS classes in their classifiers for further aggregations and analysis.

The data set is intended for free public access.

The shape main attributes correspond to the following fields:

-ID

-AREA

-PERIMETER

-HECTARES

Supplemental Information

Within the Regional HArmonization Programme (RHAP) of GLCN, the land cover mapping of the Himalaya region was carried out.

The initiative was conducted in collaboration between GLCN staff and the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), Kathmandu, Nepal.

Description
Please refer to chapter 6 ('Thematic information and its accuracy') of the 'Technical Insight' document, available under the Distribution Info section.
Statement
The original land cover was interpreted from LANDSAT ETM (years 2000 and 2006), LANDSAT TM (1990) and MSS (1970), verified by field work, digitised, checked for topological and attribute errors and mosaiced. The reaggregation has been performed by eliminating polygons below a certain area threshold. This threshold corresponds to approx. a 30 % reduction in the polygon count. The dataset was re-aggregated based on area threshold values. For more information on the area thresholds used to spatially aggregate the land cover database and the polygon count before and after the aggregation, please see the 'spatial-agg-parameters' document included in the Archive.zip.
