Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Fires in Organic Soils

This global dataset shows the geospatial data underlying FAOSTAT estimates of GreenHouse Gas (GHG) emissions from fires in organic soils. Variables in the dataset include the area burned (ha), the biomass burned (kg), and the CH4 and CO2 emissions (kg). Estimates are computed from the MODIS burned area, the area of histosols derived from the Harmonized World Soil Database (FAO et al., 2012), and IPCC fuel consumption values and emission factors, at a resolution of 500 meters. The IPCC consumption values and emission factors (IPCC, 2014) are applied by climate zone which is derived from the IPCC climate zones (JRC, 2010). The yearly data are available from 2001 to 2021 and are updated annually.
