This flagship puts together the efforts of national restoration programmes into 1 multi- country restoration flagship to showcase restoration success in different mountain ecosystems, such as tropical, subtropical, and temperate forests and woodlands, shrublands, and grasslands, in Africa (Rwanda and Uganda), Central Asia (Kyrgyzstan), and Europe (Serbia). Applied restoration activities include biodiversity conservation, afforestation, forest and pasture management and revitalization, planting of native and removal of invasive species. All activities contribute to developing the capacities and supporting the livelihoods of the often poor and marginalized mountain communities.

In 2022, declared by the UN as the international year of sustainable mountain development, this flagship can give higher visibility to restoration solutions that can be applied at the local, national and even regional level serving as inspiration for mountain ranges worldwide.

Biophysical activities: Restrictions on forest conversion; Assisted natural regeneration; Tree planting; Species control measures (physical/chemical/biological); Rainwater and runoff harvesting (e.g. terracing, stone cords, zaï, half-moons); Conservation agriculture; Grazing pressure management (physical/social fencing); Pasture and forage crop improvement

Enabling activities: Land-use planning (national, regional, local); Incentives for sustainable land-use practices; Private and community-based conservation; Participatory natural resource management and governance, Establishment of protected areas; Eco-certification; Community consultations; On-site trainings; Training of trainers; Development of guidance and course materials; Assessment of climate change vulnerability and adaptation needs; Integrated planning and management; Zoning; Land/water degradation assessment and mapping

IUCN Ecosystem biomes: Tropical-subtropical forests biome; Temperate-boreal forests & woodlands biome; Shrublands & shrubby woodlands biome; Savannas and grasslands biome; Deserts and semi-deserts biome; Intensive land-use systems biome; Rivers and streams biome
