HiH Agricultural Typologies (Bhutan)

The Bhutan Agricultural Typology is a part of the Hand-in-Hand initiative (HiH) that aimed to identify micro-regional level innovation opportunities, bottlenecks and investment gaps. This concept is based on the production possibilities frontier applied to farm activities. It draws on highly detailed household-level survey and geospatial data on agro-ecological conditions, accessibility, and poverty.

The Hand-in-Hand (HIH) is an evidence-based, country-led, and country-owned initiative of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) which aims to accelerate the agricultural transformation and sustainable rural development to eradicate poverty, and end hunger and all forms of malnutrition.

The final Bhutan Agricultural Typology consists of 7 classes and represents a combination of agricultural potential, agricultural efficiency, and poverty in the given region. The 7 classes are as follows: Critical with moderate agricultural opportunities class, the Medium priority with moderate agricultural opportunities class, the Low priority class, the High priority class, the Medium priority with high agricultural opportunities class, the Low priority with high agricultural opportunities class, and the High-performance class.
