In several countries across the world, the surging demand for livestock products is largely met by large-scale livestock production and associated food chains. Nonetheless, hundreds of millions of small-scale producers and pastoralists depend on livestock for their livelihoods. Beyond food production, farm animals play other important economic, cultural and social roles and provide multiple functions and services. They are an essential part of agro-ecosystems.

These Datasets provide data on animal production, major diseases and livestock statistics.

  • Animal Production Statistics (FAOSTAT): provides free access to food and agriculture data for over 245 countries and territories and covers all FAO regional groupings from 1961 to the most recent year available.
  • The Gridded Livestock of the World (GLW) is a peer-reviewed spatial dataset on the global distribution and abundance of livestock species. These data find applications in the fields of food and nutrition security; livelihoods and economic growth; human and animal health and welfare; and natural resources and environment. Several versions of GLW database have been released, reflecting the most recently compiled and harmonized subnational livestock distribution data at each time.
  • Global Animal Disease Information System (EMPRES-i): supports veterinary services by facilitating the organization and access to regional and global disease information. Timely and reliable disease information enhances early warning and response to transboundary and high impact animal diseases, including emergent zoonoses, and supports prevention, improved management and progressive approach to control.
  • The Global Environmental Assessment Model (GLEAM): is suite of tools, models, and data to assess the impact of livestock on the environment that is developed and maintained by FAO. GLEAM is a GIS framework that simulates the bio-physical processes and activities along livestock supply chains using a life cycle assessment approach.
