GIS MCDA - Tanzania - Crop Storage Sites: Maize

Produced under the scope of FAO’s Hand-in-Hand Initiative, Geographical Information Systems - Multicriteria Decision Analysis for value chain infrastructure location, the dataset represents an exercise on proposed or recommended sites for crop warehouses.

A location score is achieved by processing sub-model outputs that characterize logistical factors for crop warehouse location: Supply, demand, Infrastructure/accessibility. The score top 99th percentile is classified into 3 equal intervals and exclusive criteria – access to finance, distance to major road and access to IT - used to select/clip the grid into a final location raster. With minor, documented, exceptions, proposed or recommended sites use the final location raster top class within the exclusive criteria filter, and are pinpointed using large-scale visual map inspection - OpenStreetMap, Google and Bing, maps, and satellite image - to detect, logistics and industrial districts, port and railway station proximity, availability of space in urban area and to avoid residential and touristic areas or districts.
